THE KOREAN EMBASSY WOOD ENGRAVING FROM THE WASP

An interesting depiction of the Korean Embassy as published in The Wasp, a weekly San Francisco newspaper started in 1876 by Francis Korbel. The Wasp had a very political and anti-immigrant bend, advocating for closing California to Asian people. Political cartoons from The Wasp are often cited in Asian-American anti-defamation materials as early stereotyping of Chinese immigrants. This particular image is more historical than political and illustrates the principle luminaries representing the diplomats of Korea at the time, some in traditional garb. Circa 1890-1900. Framed.
