ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (ENGLISH, 1819-1905) WATERCOLOR OF BARNYARD SCENE

A charming watercolor on paper of a barnyard scene with a family of chickens painted and signed lower right A.F. Tait 1871. The back of the piece has labels from Christie's auction house. Tait was born in England and emigrated to America in 1850. He is known as the first great American sporting artist creating a variety of work with animals and frontier scenes including many illustrations for Currier and Ives. This watercolor is a good example of his fondness for animals. Tait had a long and prolific career working right up to the time of his death in 1905.
