The complete works of George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), in 25 crushed brown morocco leather bound volumes, published by Houghton Mifflin & Company Boston and New York , 1908. This edition was limited to 750 copies of which this is copy number 223. Profusely illustrated with color and black and white photogravures. Each volume with owner's name "G.W. Bingham" stamped in. Evans, a Victorian writer and translator, took a male pseudonym to give her serious work, which concerned portrayals of English country life and gender roles, among other things, an opportunity for widespread distribution. She was trying to escape the stereotype of female authors of the era writing only romantic fiction. Her most famous novel was Middlemarch written in 1871-1872 which examines the difficulties of marriage, expectations for women at the time and the conflict between idealism and financial realities. This set is in remarkably good condition with only minor signs of use. The top edges are gilt. Some pages remain uncut suggesting the volume was never read. A lovely addition to anyone's library.
