The Arion Press limited edition of "Cane" by Jean Toomer (1894-1967) #287 of 400 copies, bound in original tan linen covers with brown cloth ties, with black title on front and spine. Originally published in 1923 "Cane" was quickly recognized as an important work of Harlem Renaissance literature. The novel is structured as a series of vignettes exploring the experiences and origins of African Americans in the United States, consisting of of narrative prose, poetry and dialogue in the form of plays. It was well-received by the critics when published and remains an important early expression of the Black experience in America. This Arion Press edition contains 10 original woodcuts on Kitakata Japan paper by artist Martin Puryear, signed by him at the colophon. Puryear was born in 1941 and has worked in a variety of mediums including painting, printmaking and drawing before shifting to abstract sculpture for which he is best known. He studied at the Royal Swedish academy of Arts and Yale University. He has exhibited 3 times at the Whitney Biennale as well as the Venice Biennale and his work can be found in the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
