A lovely embossed red leather 4to size copy of Rufus Wilmot Griswold's account of the American Republican court during the presidency of George Washington. The exquisite embossed red leather cover is in excellent overall condition. All page edges are gilt. This first edition was published in 1855 and depicts Griswold's account of the American Republican court during the presidency of George washington. The 21 portraits of distinguished women include Martha Washington, Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, Mrs. James Madison, Mrs. John Adams and many others. The engravings were taken from paintings by the greatest artists of the day including Gilbert Stuart, John Copley and Thomas Gainsborough. This is a particularly well-preserved copy of an interesting and decorative historical text. Front cover is embossed with the name Celia Requa.
