MARIO MAURO (ITALIAN 1920-1984) FAUVIST STYLE PAINTING DEPICTING A VILLAGE SCENE
A brilliantly colored expressionist painting by Mario Mauro (1920-1984) signed lower right "Mauro" and titled on verso in French. Born in Rivgnano, Italy, the artist entered the Brera Fine Arts Academy in Milan at the age of 18. Shortly thereafter he was conscripted to fight in the First World War. In 1950 he emigrated to Canada where for many years he created numerous frescoes and mosaics in churches in Quebec and other Canadian provinces. Known for his brilliantly colored landscapes, he has had many solo exhibitions both in Ottawa and Quebec City. Mauro's work can be found in public and private collections. The present example is a fine and large winter scene depicting the village of Ile Marie Les Eboulements in Quebec. Beautifully framed in a handsome white and gilt moulding. Signed Mauro and titled and dated on verso, 1980.
