GUSTAVE BAUMANN (GERMAN 1881-1971) "HILLSIDE WOODS" COLORED WOODCUT DATED 1917

Gustave Baumann (German 1881-1971) "Hillside Woods" colored woodcut dated 1917. Full margins, signed, titled and numbered 39/120 in pencil lower right. A good impression of this scarce woodcut with strong colors. Hillside is located in Wyoming, New York where the artist spent the fall and winter of 1917-1918. Baumann was an American print maker and painter and a leading member of the color woodcut revival in American. His works have been exhibited at major American museums including the National Gallery of Art in Washington.He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago after emigrating from Germany. He won a gold medal for his work at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. He spent the last 50 years of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and the Taos Society of Artists. An example of this image was sold 12/11/21 by Santa Fe Art Auction for $10,200.
