An English Charles II style oak joint stool of typical form, with bobbin turned legs and a rectangular top. Before the widespread adoption of chairs, joint stools were the standard daily seating optio for most people. Unlike chairs, which were made by skilled cabinetmakers, joint stools were crafted by joiners using traditional mortise and tenon construction. The bobbin turned leg style became popular in the late 17th century adding a bit of style to these otherwise utilitarian pieces of seat furniture. The current example may date from the 18th century or possibly later but retains all of the construction techniques of pieces from the period. Very solid in construction and suitable for daily use with good color and patina as well.
