A US Navy Bureau of Ships Mounted Compass model 11310 manufactured in 1942 by the Longines Wittnauer Watch Co. Inc. This model was an important piece of navigation equipment used by the U.S. Navy during WWII, often on lifeboats and smaller vessels. The compass is a liquid filled gimbal-mounted instrument designed to emain stable on a moving vessel. The side mounted spheres on the sides are iron corrector balls used to counteract magnetic interference from other metal on the ship. The present example is in very attractive working condition and exceptional sturdy construction.
